Avoid these dog walking mistakes

Person walking a dog on a trail

Walks are bathroom breaks and also brain time: new smells, sounds, and social encounters. Rushing through on a tight leash every day can increase frustration for both ends of the leash.

Constant pulling: If the dog only ever moves forward while pulling, pulling becomes the strategy. Mix short training sessions (reward slack leash) with sniff breaks so needs are met ethically.

Heat and pavement: Hot asphalt burns pads; brachycephalic breeds overheat faster. Walk in cooler hours, carry water on longer routes, and watch for lagging or heavy panting.

Flexi leads near traffic: They can be useful in open spaces but are risky beside roads or crowded sidewalks where sudden lunges extend distance unpredictably.

Ignoring body language: Forcing greetings with every stranger dog can spark fights. Advocate for your dog’s comfort zone.
