Natural approaches to ease occasional constipation

Calm wellness and movement

Occasional sluggish bowels are common. First-line self-care usually combines gradual fiber increase, adequate fluids (unless your doctor restricts them), and regular physical activity such as walking.

Fiber with patience: Jumping from very low fiber to very high overnight can cause gas and cramping. Add one extra serving of vegetables, oats, or legumes every few days and notice how you feel.

Toilet habits: Allow unhurried time after breakfast when the gastrocolic reflex is stronger. A footstool can improve angle for some people.

When to stop DIY care: blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, severe pain, vomiting, new constipation after age 50, or symptoms lasting more than a couple of weeks warrant medical evaluation—do not assume it is “just fiber.”
